If you don’t have sufficient personal energy, how can your productivity and profit goals be reached?

I don’t know about you but I reckon personal energy management at this time of year is a bit like charging your mobile phone. You know that you should really leave your phone to charge to 100% but you just don’t have the time – you need short, quick bursts of charge and energy to keep going for the next few weeks.

A recent study indicates Australian small business owners sacrifice their personal wellbeing in order to achieve success in their business.

The survey of 500 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by regional lender and insurance company Suncorp, shows more than two-thirds of small business operators have experienced personal challenges including fatigue, financial stress, loss of motivation or relationship strain because of their work.

It’s important to become aware of what your personal energy depleting behaviours are. They might look a bit like this…

  • You can’t focus on just one thing
  • You are easily distracted by new ‘shiny objects’
  • You are procastinating and making excuses
  • You are struggling to complete tasks on time
  • Your patience is wearing thin
  • You’re not stopping to take the time to show your appreciation and interest in those around you
  • You are ‘burning the wick at both ends’ and not spending enough time on your own self-care and basic requirements

Here’s 11 Personal Energy Elevators to quickly and easily boost your personal energy to have you powering through the end of 2018 smashing out your final goals.

1. Get some sunshine – the warmth and energy of the sun, as well as surrounding yourself in nature and being outdoors in the fresh air can improve your mood and increase oxygenation to the brain.

2. Break a sweat – If you can manage a workout or be able to just move your body to shake things up – you will quickly notice your energy level increase!

3. Embrace routine! Go to sleep earlier, rise earlier, nourish yourself with healthy, fresh food.

4. Create a personal affirmation that empowers you. Say this affirmation outloud or silently, particularly at times where you feel your limits are being stretched. ‘You’ve got this!’

5. Spend time with loved ones. If you have to schedule this in, then do until it just becomes routine and habit (as sad as this sounds but is too often the case in today’s world). This might be ensuring that you have breakfast with your family each morning instead of grabbing something quickly and walking out the door.

6. Rest your eyes – Be sure to take regular breaks away from computer, phones and any other screens. Your eyes become fatigued and therefore cause the rest of your body to start feeling tired as well. Doctors recommend taking 20 second micro breaks every 20 seconds to allow your eyes to recover.

7. Essential oils – I was dubious about this but then I tried it and I am now a fan. You can try using certain essential oils to help enhance your work environment. In particular, grapefruit, peppermint, orange, lemon, eucalyptus and cedar oil can assist in increasing energy and clarity.

 

 

8. Rock out to your favourite music – Move and shake to your all-time favourites. It quickly elevates your mood, can clear brain fog and overwhelm and allows you to focus on the tasks ahead.

9. Have a quick spring clean – Give your office and desk space a tidy up by de-cluttering, taking out the rubbish, have some fresh flowers and colour and maybe even try re-arranging the furniture. It’s a great way to remove any unwanted, stagnant energy that seems to be weighing you down.  Enables you to power on with a clearer vision!

10. Just breathe – Take note of your breathing. Are they short, shallow breaths? Close your eyes, and concentrate on slowing down your breathing. In for 4 seconds and out for 4 seconds… Your heart rate will slow and you will start to feel more relaxed and at ease.

11. Get social – it’s that time of year so choose wisely the events that are most important to you.  Step out of the daily grind and allow yourself to socialise and connect with others for no other reason than to relax and have a good time.
